Designer's Tips

The Tabard Theatre is a theatre complex owned and operated by the Napier Operatic Society.
In the 1950's rehearsal rooms were purchased in Coronation St, and eventually the society obtained three adjoining properties, on which the present complex was built.

The theatre can operate as a theatre restaurant seating about 125, or as a standard proscenium theatre, seating about 200. Although the stage under the fly tower is raised, there is no actual permanent proscenium, and the auditorium itself has a flat floor with a full lighting grid suspended over it, so the space can be very flexible.

Opening off stage left via large folding doors is a rehearsal area which can itself be used as a studio theatre, with a pipe lighting grid over.

The complex has a full restaurant kitchen, a public bar and large scenery workshops.

Auditorium Description:

Flat floor with full lighting grid over. Rostra available to rake seating for proscenium style theatre.

Stage:

Raised stage with demountable thrust, removal of which allows for small orchestra pit. No permanent proscenium. Fly tower over stage with fly floor. Some counterweights. Stage left large folding door opens to adjacent rehearsal room. Stage right similar door opens to workshops. Sliding door rear of stage for get-in. Two dressing rooms at rear of stage.
