Designer's Tips

In 1876 A large (149 hectare) Botanical Park was created on the outskirts of the city of New Plymouth. Within this park was an area of swampland that nevertheless formed a natural amphitheatre, and in 1955 the site was developed to create the Bowl of Brooklands.

Up to 15,000 people (2,500 on plastic seats) can be accommodated on the grass banks forming the amphitheatre, viewing the performance across a natural lake.

In 1997 the Bowl of Brooklands Trust began a series of works to upgrade the venue. The lake was narrowed 20 metres and the stage extended. A Curved roof was built over the stage, and new dressing rooms and other facilities added.
The venue is available over summer (November to March) and hosts large music concerts, Ballet, fireworks displays and the like.
