BATS Theatre is an intimate venue located in the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes building at 1 Kent Terrace.

The venue has had a long and varied life, starting originally in the 1930's as The Savage Club, a dance hall and venue for amateur theatre.

In the late 60's until 1975 Unity Theatre was in residence, a society with a tradition of left-wing political affiliations and a strong core membership which went on and contributed to the growth and success of Downstage and later Circa theatres.

From 1979 to 1988 the theatre was administered by the BATS Incorporated Society. BATS is short for the Bain and Austin Touring Society, (named after Rodney Bain and David Austin, the founding members of BATS). BATS Inc began as a prolific amateur theatre company, producing school tours and shows.

In the early 80's however, commitment waned and BATS Theatre simply became a venue for hire, administered by BATS Inc.

The theatre reopened as a professional venue on 1 April 1989 under management of Simon Bennett and Simon Elson. Since 1991 it has been managed by a small team with the help of a broad base of contract workers and volunteers.

The theatre now receives ongoing funding from Creative New Zealand, and is currently New Zealand's strongest developmental theatre, with an annual program of between 50 to 60 shows; at least thirty of those shows being New Zealand premieres.

Physical Venue Description:
Approaching BATS from its street frontage one enters a small 1930's building via marble steps and a pair of old wooden doors. Stepping through the doors you enter into the foyer which houses the ticket booth just beyond a circular archway. Continuing through the second set of double doors one enters the bar area, and directly off here one enters the theatre proper - a "black box" venue seating 91 on steeply raked seating.
Backstage houses a workshop, a hanging room for lights and a small storage space for props and set. The dressing rooms with toilet and shower facilities are upstairs.

Operating Structure:
BATS is a presenting venue reliant on cooperatives wanting to produce works at the venue.. These cooperatives are driven by artists, producers and already established theatre companies who submit scripts or proposals to be considered for programming. Fundamental to BATS is the maintenance of low ticket prices and a share/risk policy between the theatre & cooperatives
The program is made up of: Festivals (Wellington Fringe Festival and Laugh Comedy Festival); Seasons (Young & Hungry & STAB); main bill shows; early and late night shows as well. The program is aimed at developing new works from Aotearoa/New Zealand and presenting experimental shows from around this country and overseas. BATS premiers up to thirty New Zealand works a year - more than any other theatre in New Zealand.
