The
following mostly taken from the excellent Wellington City Council Heritage
Building Inventory - Shed 11 is one of two identical sheds that were built as cargo stores in 1905, designed by William Ferguson, the Harbour Board Engineer. Because the sheds were erected on reclaimed land, the method adopted to construct the foundation was `to drive piers or piles connected together by beams of concrete, reinforced with steel, a form of construction which has not hitherto been adopted in the Board's structures and which has provided a less costly continuous foundation than could have been obtained had the whole foundation been piled. The roof is of a King-post truss construction. The two buildings have Wade's patent skylights, roughcast and stucco under the parapets, and the Harbour Board Crest on the walls, all of which contribute to the Dutch style of detailing. Shed 11 is now used by the National Art Gallery as a Temporary Contemporary Gallery. This was the first building on the waterfront to be refurbished and opened for public use. |
