The following mostly taken from the excellent Wellington City Council Heritage Building Inventory:

The Star Boating Club was formed in 1856 and is possibly one of the oldest rowing clubs in New Zealand. William Chatfield, the Thorndon Village Architect, designed the present boating club building in 1885. As the club had already had previous moves due to reclamation Chatfield designed the boat shed on iron rails. In 1889 it was towed away from impending reclamation by a steam engine to it's resting place at 51 Jervois Quay.

sb04.jpgFrom 1969 to 1973 Downstage Theatre company moved temporarily to the Star Boating Club while the Hannah Playhouse was being constructed. In 1989 the building was moved again, 100 metres forward onto the wharf as part of the first stage of the Lambton Harbour Development.

The upper story of the building is available for hire for functions etc., and has been used as a venue and official club of the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts.
