Waitangi Park
Wellington, New Zealand
Completed in time to host the 2006 New
Zealand International Festival of the Arts, Waitangi Park is Wellington's
newest city playground, for both adults and kids.
Built on reclaimed land that has been used for many utilitarian
purposes over the last century (including a morgue, a bus park and
a large scale incinerator, the "Wellington Destructor"
(opposite).
|
|
| Finally, following the building of Te
Papa (The Museum of New Zealand) the rather scrappy and neglected
"Chaffer's Park" (opposite) was the subject of a design
competition for a new outdoor space for the city. The winning design
by Wraight Athfield Landscape & Architecture Ltd includes over
6000 sq metres of grassland ringed with an urban wetland. |
|
|
The wetlands are more than just a landscape feature; they are
designed to filter and cleanse the Waitangi stream, which has
for years run in a culvert under the surface, and is now bought
back to the surface. Other parts are designed to cleanse stormwater
pollution.
Also included within the park are a large number of trees (at
present in their infancy), a large area for skateboarders, and
an innovative kids playground.
