The State Theatre.

Built at the same time as the Invercargill State Insurance Theatrette, both theatres were built on the ground floor of the new State Insurance buildings, opening in 1978. Under CEO Neville Ainsworth, the State Insurance company had already purchased Wellington's Grand Opera House (in April 1977) and the Trinity Church adjoining their Christchurch building, which was renovated and converted into a theatre in 1975.

In both new buildings the company's public counters were on the first floor, while the ground floor was given over to the community in form of the theatres and large display areas.

Although the State Insurance company no longer owns the building, it remains the highest building in New Plymouth (see the panorama of the city photographed from its roof), and the theatre remained in its original condition and decor until it was demolished in 2004.
