1867 there were casinos or dancing halls at Charleston, Westport,
Greymouth and Hokitika. they had "good orchestras"
and groups of dancing girls brought from Australia. The casinos
were the centre of night life, and were sometimes used for local
concerts, balls and travelling entertainers. But dancing and drinking
were their main business; the three halls in Westport,
for instance, vied against each other "in the strength of
their musical bands, the number of dancers, and the shortness
of their skirts" |
